Typography & Type Design in Cambodia

Anagata will be talking about the current situation and development of the type industry in Cambodia as well as share the effects it has on other business sectors within the country. A quick tour of Cambodia typographic landscape and a touch on typical stereotypes of the choice of Khmer font in the branding system.

Sovichet Tep

Sovichet Tep is a self-taught type designer specializing in Khmer script based in Cambodia and is currently the type director at Anagata, a design studio specializing in brand identity and type design. He has published various free Khmer typefaces on his blog and two on Google Fonts. His typefaces have been used by everyone from big corporations like Smart to bright startups like Wapatoa and he has also produced custom Khmer typefaces for brands such as Carlsberg Group & Grab. Since 2017 he has been traveling the world doing talks about the history of the Khmer script and the principles of Khmer type design at prominent type design conferences.

Both Bou

Both Bou is an award-winning designer specializing in brand identity & typography with an emphasis on concept and strategy. He currently is the creative director at Anagata, a design studio specializing in brand identity and type design. He led the notable identity redesign of Baramey, a Khmer music label, which helped revitalize the company's image as being one of the leading music labels for original music in Cambodia. Both’s work has been featured on well-known identity design publications such as Logolounge and The Brand Identity and has given a TED Talk on the significance of good logos.
