Kameel Hawa:
The Spring of Arabic Typography

In the absence of exuberant political thought, Arab youth have taken refuge in the arts. One impressive aspect that Kameel has witnessed through the work that is disseminated on social media, to spite all borders, is that Arabic type design has finally been liberated from the subservience to the limited styles of inherited traditional calligraphy. Yet in the same token, formations of modernized calligraphy started finding new visual expression too. It is exactly three decades ago that Almohtaraf design house, several typefaces widely used have been designed in the same spirit, steering away from limiting traditional practices. In his talk, Kameel will share insights from his long quest to find, develop and disseminate beautiful new shapes.

This talk is scheduled to take place online, , 2021, at in your current time zone (/UTC), as part of the main Typographics conference. Conference registration is available on a pay-what-you-can basis.
