Typography as a tool for the protection of indigenous languages and cultures
The Silabario Amazónico initiative (2016) is a proposal for a writing system for indigenous South American languages. Because it is an alpha-syllabary or abugida, I used open-type technology and developed a font for this writing system. The development of this project has allowed me to work with professionals in linguistics, anthropology and programming to create tools and methodologies for the dissemination and preservation of languages, as is the case of the project “Digital keyboards for indigenous languages” and is currently being developed for the Kichwa of Ecuador. I have also made a historical compendium of the antecedents of pre-Columbian writing systems, and I have made experiments with modular typography to pass these sign elements from the historical record to the digital one.
La iniciativa Silabario Amazónico (2016), es una propuesta de sistema de escritura para lenguas indígenas sudamericanas. Por tratarse de un alfasilabario o abugida, usé tecnología open type y desarrollé una tipografía para este sistema de escritura. El desarrollo de este proyecto me ha permitido trabajar con profesionales de lingüística, antropología y programación para crear herramientas y metodologías para la difusión y preservación de las lenguas, como lo es el caso del proyecto “Teclados digitales para lenguas indígenas” y actualmente se está desarrollando para el Kichwa de Ecuador. También he hecho un compendio histórico de los antecedentes de sistemas de escritura precolombinos, y he hecho experimentos con tipografía modular para pasar estos elementos sígnicos del registro histórico al digital.

Juan Casco, Puyo. 1991. Visual Artist, Graphic Designer, and Typographer. He is a researcher of the history and writing systems of the entire world, especially of pre-Columbian cultures, which led him to create in 2016 the Silabario Amazónico, a proposal for a Writing System for indigenous languages. This has allowed him to work with linguistics, anthropology, and programming professionals who, together with their experience in digital typography, create tools and methodologies for the dissemination and preservation of languages. He is currently studying Visual Arts at the University of the Arts.

Es investigador de la historia y sistemas de escritura de todo el mundo especialmente de las culturas precolombinas lo cual lo llevó a crear en 2016 la iniciativa Silabario Amazónico, una propuesta de Sistema de escritura para lenguas indígenas. Lo cual le ha permitido trabajar con profesionales de lingüística, antropología y programación que junto a su experiencia en tipografía digital para crear herramientas y metodologías para la difusión y preservación de las lenguas. Actualmente estudia Artes Visuales en la Universidad de las Artes.
