Aarman Roy and Charu Pragya:
Artists as Purveyors of News
Akademi Mag is an independent digital publication based out of India. The central tenet of the publishing, editorial, and artistic practice that Akademi embodies is that theoretically rich perspectives on politics, culture, and society are necessary for an informed praxis. The publication attempts to achieve this goal by engaging in a mode of inquiry that intertwines facts and figures with normative values – alongside a rigorous emphasis on the role played by art in relation to informed public life in a democracy. We believe that art stems from strong political and social demands. With respect to the broader informational economy, attention must be paid to the aesthetic quality of the presentation of news and discourse. Through the talk, we will situate our design choices and the publication’s existence within India’s political climate and take the audience through a round-up of the publication’s journalistic and artistic products, as well as the minutiae of its production processes.
